The Master of Guidance and Psychological Counseling is a two-year, clinically intensive graduate program that trains licensed psychological counselors who can provide individual and group counseling, family therapy, career guidance, crisis intervention, and mental-health support in schools, universities, private clinics, hospitals, NGOs, and corporate wellness programs throughout Turkey, fully authorized to practice independently under the Ministry of Health and Turkish Psychological Association regulations. Offered at the educational-sciences and psychology institutes of Turkey’s most respected universities with dedicated counseling centers and school partnerships (Hacettepe University, Ankara University, Boğaziçi University, Middle East Technical University, Marmara University, İstanbul University-Cerrahpaşa, Ege University, Başkent University, Üsküdar University, İstanbul Bilgi University, and more than fifty strong programs), it remains the primary and most recognized qualification for professional psychological counseling practice in the country.Students work under professors who supervise the Ministry of National Education’s school-counseling services, run university psychological-counseling centers, and publish in Journal of Counseling Psychology and Turkish Psychological Counseling and Guidance Journal. The first year delivers a rigorous theoretical and technical core: advanced counseling theories and techniques (person-centered, CBT, solution-focused, existential, systemic family therapy), psychological assessment and testing for counseling, ethics and legal issues, multicultural and gender-sensitive counseling, group counseling dynamics, career counseling and vocational development, developmental psychology across the lifespan, psychopathology for counselors, trauma-informed practice, and research methods. The second year consists almost entirely of supervised clinical practice (minimum 600–750 direct client contact hours plus 150 hours of group work) in university counseling centers, public and private schools, hospitals, family counseling centers, women’s shelters, rehabilitation centers, and corporate EAP programs, with weekly individual and group supervision by licensed senior counselors. The master’s thesis is usually an applied intervention study or outcome-research project that is regularly published or presented at national congresses. Graduates receive the official title of Psychological Counselor and are immediately eligible for independent practice licensing and Ministry of National Education school-counselor appointments. They are preferentially employed as school counselors in public and elite private schools, university counseling-center therapists, private-practice clinicians, family counselors at municipal and ministry centers, corporate wellness and EAP specialists at banks and large holdings, hospital liaison counselors, NGO trauma and refugee counselors, and increasingly open their own licensed psychological-counseling centers or multidisciplinary clinics.Salaries in private practice and top institutions are among the highest of all master’s-level mental-health professions in Turkey, often several times higher than public-sector pay, with significant additional income from private sessions. The social prestige of Guidance and Psychological Counseling master’s graduates has risen dramatically as mental-health awareness has grown: they are recognized as the frontline professionals who support students, families, and individuals through educational, emotional, and life challenges with scientific rigor and deepempathy.Inn short, the Master of Guidance and Psychological Counseling produces clinically excellent, ethically impeccable, and legally authorized psychological counselors who occupy the most trusted and respected positions in Turkey’s expanding mental-health and education ecosystem, enjoying full professional autonomy, outstanding earning potential, and the profound daily privilege of guiding people toward healthier, happier, and more fulfilling lives.
