Program Overview

Bachelor of Medicine (Turkish), Maltepe University

The Bachelor of Medicine is a six-year integrated medical education program that trains physicians who can diagnose, treat, and prevent diseases with scientific excellence, clinical mastery, and deep humanistic values, meeting the highest international standards while serving the health needs of Turkish society. Offered at the faculties of medicine of Turkey’s most prestigious universities (Hacettepe University, Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa, Ankara University, Ege University, Marmara University, Gazi University, Koç University, Acıbadem University, Medipol University, Yeditepe University, Başkent University, TOBB University of Economics and Technology, and more than ninety other state and foundation medical schools), it remains the most respected and demanding degree in the country, selected by students with the very highest national examination scores. The first three years focus on integrated basic and clinical sciences through a modern, systems-based curriculum that includes anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, histology and embryology, medical biology and genetics, microbiology, immunology, pathology, pharmacology, public health, biostatistics and epidemiology, medical ethics, behavioral sciences, and early clinical exposure through family medicine and hospital visits. From the beginning of the fourth year, students enter full-time clinical training in university hospitals and affiliated training hospitals with intensive clerkships in internal medicine, pediatrics, general surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, psychiatry, neurology, cardiology, pulmonology, dermatology, orthopedics, emergency medicine, radiology, anesthesiology, otorhinolaryngology, ophthalmology, urology, neurosurgery, physical medicine and rehabilitation, forensic medicine, and family medicine. Throughout the sixth year, students work as intern doctors under supervision in all major departments, taking night shifts, writing orders, performing procedures, and assuming real patient responsibility.Clinical skills laboratories, simulation centers, and standardized patient programs ensure that graduates master physical examination, basic surgical techniques, resuscitation, communication skills, and evidence-based decision making before encountering real patients. Research is strongly encouraged: every student completes a graduation thesis, and many publish in international journals or present at congresses before graduation.Graduates receive the title of Medical Doctor (M.D.) and, after passing the national licensing examination (TUS for specialization or direct practice), begin working as general practitioners or enter one of the highly competitive specialty residency programs. They are employed in university hospitals, Ministry of Health training and research hospitals, state hospitals, private hospital chains (Acıbadem, Memorial, Medicana, Medical Park, Liv Hospital), city hospitals built under public-private partnership models, family health centers, private clinics, the Turkish Armed Forces health services, and increasingly in international organizations or abroad after equivalence procedures.Turkish medical graduates are recognized worldwide for their strong clinical training and manual skills, and thousands practice successfully in Europe (especially Germany), the United States, the United Kingdom, Gulf countries, and Australia after passing relevant licensing examinations (USMLE, PLAB, Approbation, etc.). Those who choose academic careers become professors and department heads who educate future generations and lead medical research in Turkey. The social prestige of physicians remains unmatched in Turkish society: they are seen as the ultimate professionals who dedicate their lives to saving others, enjoying lifelong respect, stable and high income (among the highest of all professions, especially in private practice and certain specialties), and the profound satisfaction of making a tangible difference in human lives every singleday.Inn short, the Bachelor of Medicine produces compassionate, scientifically rigorous, and clinically excellent physicians who occupy the most trusted and respected position in society while carrying the responsibility and privilege of protecting and restoring human health at the highest possible level.
