The Associate of Elderly Care is a two-year vocational higher education program specifically created to train professional caregivers and care technicians who can provide high-quality physical, psychological, social, and daily living support to elderly individuals both at home and in institutional settings, responding directly to Turkey's rapidly aging population and the growing need for qualified personnel in nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, daytime care facilities, and home-care services. Offered at health services vocational schools of nearly every university across the country and experiencing continuous enrollment increases, the program combines medical knowledge, practical care skills, and strong ethical training to produce graduates who can work effectively under nurses and physicians while taking primary responsibility for the daily well-being of older adults. Students study a comprehensive curriculum that includes basic anatomy and physiology, geriatric physiology and age-related diseases (dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, osteoporosis, hypertension, diabetes), geriatric pharmacology and safe medication administration, infection control and hygiene standards, nutrition and diet planning for the elderly, mobility and transfer techniques, fall prevention and safety measures, pressure ulcer prevention and wound care, incontinence management, basic rehabilitation and physiotherapy applications, emergency first aid and CPR specific to older adults, communication techniques with elderly individuals and families, psychological support and coping with depression or loneliness, dementia care approaches and validation techniques, activities of daily living assistance (bathing, dressing, feeding, toileting), recreational and cognitive stimulation activities, palliative and end-of-life care principles, elderly rights and abuse prevention, institutional care standards and regulations of the Ministry of Family and Social Services, home-care planning and environmental adaptations, record-keeping and care plan documentation, and professional ethics and boundaries in elderly care. More than sixty percent of the program consists of practical training conducted in fully equipped skills laboratories that simulate home and nursing home environments and in real clinical settings through regular practice days at university hospitals’ geriatric clinics, public nursing homes, private elderly care centers, and rehabilitation units. Students learn to use mobility aids (wheelchairs, walkers, transfer belts), perform safe bed baths and personal hygiene procedures, measure vital signs accurately, assist with feeding and swallowing difficulties, organize therapeutic activities, manage behavioral symptoms in dementia patients, and communicate respectfully with elderly individuals who may have hearing or cognitive impairments. The program concludes with a compulsory thirty to forty day internship completed in public or private elderly care institutions or certified home-care agencies, during which students work full shifts under supervision and often receive job offers before graduation. Graduates holding the title of Elderly Care Technician are immediately employable and enjoy excellent job security because Turkey currently faces a severe shortage of trained caregivers while the proportion of citizens over sixty-five is rising faster than almost anywhere else in Europe, creating thousands of new positions every year. They are employed primarily in public nursing homes and rehabilitation centers operated by the Ministry of Family and Social Services, private elderly care and rehabilitation centers (Türkiye’nin largest chains such as Türkiye Huzurevi, Mediland, Sevgi Huzurevi, Koru Yaşam, Sabiha Gökçen Huzurevi), daytime living centers for semi-independent seniors, university hospital geriatric wards, municipality home-care services that provide assistance to elderly living at home, private home-care companies that send caregivers to residences on daily or live-in basis, Alzheimer’s and dementia specialized units, palliative care centers, and luxury retirement communities that offer hotel-style services with medical support. Many graduates work in shifts that include night duties with additional pay, while others prefer home-care assignments that offer more flexible hours and often higher earnings through private arrangements with families. Salaries are competitive among health-related associate degrees and rise quickly with experience and additional certifications (dementia care, palliative care, first aid instructor). The social respect for elderly care professionals has increased significantly in recent years as society recognizes their difficult yet compassionate work, especially after the heightened awareness created by the pandemic regarding the vulnerability of older adults. Families and institutions now actively seek formally trained caregivers rather than untrained personnel, giving graduates clear professional advantage and pride in their role as protectors of the elderly generation that built modern Turkey. Some graduates continue their studies through the vertical transfer exam to Nursing, Physiotherapy, or Gerontology bachelor’s programs, while the majority prefer to remain in the practical field where empathy combined with technical skill leads to stable, meaningful, and increasingly well-compensated careers. In summary, the Associate of Elderly Care program produces compassionate, competent, and officially recognized professionals who occupy an absolutely essential and growing position in Turkish society, ensuring that the country’s elderly population receives dignified, safe, and loving care during their later years while offering graduates secure employment, respectable status, and deep personal satisfaction in one of the most socially valuable professions available today.
