Program Overview

Bachelor of Turkish Folk Music (Turkish), Maltepe University

The Bachelor of Turkish Folk Music is a four-year undergraduate program delivered entirely in Turkish at state conservatories and university fine arts faculties, designed to train professional folk singers, bağlama and folk instrument virtuosos, chorus conductors, arrangers, and researchers who can perform, preserve, and renew Turkey’s immensely rich and diverse folk music heritage from every region while also creating contemporary works for concert halls, festivals, film soundtracks, television, and global world-music stages.Throughout the program students receive intensive individual and group training that turns them into complete masters of Turkish folk music performance and scholarship. They achieve virtuoso-level proficiency on core folk instruments (bağlama family – kısa sap, uzun sap, divan, cura, tambura, three-string and bowed bağlama varieties, kabak kemane, zurna, davul-zurna, kaval, tulum, mey, cura, çifte, folk violin, clarinet in G, and percussion), develop powerful regional vocal styles (Thrace, Aegean, Black Sea horon singing, Central Anatolian bozlak and uzun hava, Southeastern deyiş and ağıt, East Anatolian türkü and stran), master asymmetric rhythms (5/8, 7/8, 9/8, 10/8, 12/8) and complex aksak patterns, learn thousands of authentic türkü, deyiş, bozlak, hoyrat, maya, and horon melodies from source singers and archival recordings, study regional folklore, dance accompaniment, storytelling traditions, and oral transmission methods, master advanced arrangement and orchestration techniques for folk ensembles and symphony orchestras, choral conducting for large folk choirs, studio recording and live-sound engineering for folk music, ethnomusicology fieldwork and transcription, instrument making and repair basics. Students perform weekly in university folk music ensembles, record professional albums in campus studios, tour nationally with regional folklore shows, participate in major festivals (Hacıbektaş Veli Festival, Konya Turkish Folk Music Days, Erzurum Karakucak, Trabzon Horon Festival, Istanbul CRR Folk Nights), complete internships at TRT Turkish Folk Music ensembles, State Folk Music and Dance Ensembles, Ministry of Culture regional choirs, and leading private folk groups (Arif Sağ Ensemble, Musa Eroğlu, Erdal Erzincan, Cengiz Özkan, Grup Abdal, Kardelen, Ekin Uzunlar), and graduate with a public graduation recital, original arrangements, and a professional demo album.Graduates of the Bachelor of Turkish Folk Music enjoy respected, highly visible careers in Turkey’s deeply loved folk music culture. They are immediately employed as soloists and ensemble members in TRT Folk Music departments, State Folk Dance and Music Ensembles, municipality folk music choirs, leading folk music groups and concert tours, composers and arrangers for historical and contemporary TV series and cinema, session musicians in Istanbul and Ankara recording studios, bağlama and folk instrument instructors in conservatories and music schools, folk music directors of cultural centers and festivals, academic researchers and faculty members, radio and television program hosts specializing in folk music, and independent artists who release bestselling albums and perform sold-out concerts across Turkey and in Turkish diaspora communities in Europe. Many become nationally cherished “halk ozanı” (people’s poets) who carry regional traditions to millions while others score blockbuster series and films that reach 100+ countries. The profession commands enormous cultural prestige and heartfelt public love because these artists are seen as the living voice of Anatolia’s soul, keeping centuries-old melodies alive for new generations. Starting salaries are strong in state institutions and rise dramatically with concert fees, album sales, television appearances, and international tours, while top folk artists, ensemble leaders, and soundtrack composers routinely achieve upper-middle-class and celebrity-level income together with lifelong reverence as cultural icons. In short, the Bachelor of Turkish Folk Music offers a spiritually profound, technically masterful, and nationally treasured education that transforms gifted young musicians into the direct bearers and renewers of Turkey’s most beloved musical heritage.
