Bachelor of Orthotics and Prosthetics (Turkish) is a highly specialized, clinically intensive four-year health sciences undergraduate program that trains graduates to become licensed Orthotist-Prosthetists who independently design, manufacture, fit, and rehabilitate custom-made orthoses (braces, splints, orthopedic insoles, scoliosis corsets) and prostheses (upper- and lower-limb artificial limbs, myoelectric arms, carbon-fiber sports blades, silicone cosmetic restorations) for patients with amputations, cerebral palsy, stroke, spinal cord injury, polio sequelae, congenital deformities, and musculoskeletal disorders in university hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and private orthotics-prosthetics workshops throughout Turkey. From the first year, students master foundational sciences (anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, pathology, kinesiology, material science) and immediately begin hands-on workshop training in modern laboratories equipped with CAD/CAM systems (Rodin4D, Össur Design Studio), 3D scanners and printers, vacuum forming, carbon-fiber lamination, silicone molding, and microprocessor-controlled components (Össur, Ottobock, Blatchford, Fillauer). Clinical education exceeds 1,400 supervised hours: second-year students measure and produce simple orthoses; third-year students fabricate complete lower-limb prostheses and fit them on real patients; fourth-year students manage complex cases including myoelectric upper-limb systems, advanced knee and ankle joints with stance-phase control, and pediatric growth-adaptive devices under direct supervision of licensed specialists in affiliated university hospitals (Hacettepe, İstanbul Üniversitesi-Cerrahpaşa, Acıbadem, Memorial, Medicana) and Ministry of Health rehabilitation centers.Graduates are immediately eligible for the Ministry of Health licensing exam and open their own IS0 13485-certified workshops or are employed at university hospitals, state rehabilitation centers, private clinics, and leading Turkish and international manufacturers (Össur Türkiye, Ottobock Türkiye, Protek, Ortopedi Ltd.). Demand is extremely high due to Turkey’s large amputee population from diabetes, traffic accidents, earthquakes, and congenital conditions, plus expanding social security coverage for advanced prosthetic components.Salaries rank among the highest in allied health professions: experienced orthotist-prosthetists operating private centers in Istanbul, Ankara, and İzmir frequently exceed monthly earnings of many medical specialists, while public-sector positions offer civil-servant stability with rapid promotion. Socially, they command deep respect and gratitude as the professionals who literally give mobility back to children born without limbs, enable war veterans and earthquake survivors to walk again, and allow athletes with disabilities to return tocompetition.Inn short, the Bachelor of Orthotics and Prosthetics offers one of the most technically advanced, clinically rewarding, and financially lucrative health careers in Turkey, combining engineering precision with daily patient transformation and the extraordinary privilege of restoring independence and dignity to thousands of people who have lost the ability to move.
